You’re driving along when suddenly a little orange or yellow engine-shaped light appears on your dashboard. Your car may seem completely normal—or it may be running rough, losing power, or doing something that just doesn’t feel right.

So, why is your check engine light on?

The check engine light is your vehicle’s way of telling you that its onboard diagnostic system has detected something outside of normal operating conditions. Sometimes the cause is relatively minor. Other times, the light can indicate a problem that should be addressed quickly to prevent further damage.

The important thing is not to panic—but don’t ignore it either.

Here are seven common reasons your check engine light may come on and what you should do about it.

1. A Loose or Damaged Gas Cap

Believe it or not, one of the simplest things can trigger your check engine light.

Your fuel system is designed to be sealed. A loose, damaged, or missing gas cap can allow fuel vapors to escape and cause the vehicle’s emissions monitoring system to detect a problem.

If your check engine light appears shortly after filling up, check the gas cap first. Make sure it is properly tightened.

Flashing Check Engine Light

A flashing check engine light deserves more immediate attention.

It commonly indicates an active engine misfire severe enough that unburned fuel may enter and damage the catalytic converter.

If your check engine light is flashing—especially if the vehicle is shaking, running poorly, losing power, overheating, or making unusual noises—avoid unnecessary driving and have the vehicle inspected as soon as possible.

Can I Keep Driving With My Check Engine Light On?

It depends on what’s causing it.

If the light is solid and the vehicle seems to be operating normally, you may be able to drive it for a short period while arranging an appointment.
